Today I squeezed in a visit to the exhibition Eyes Wide Open at the First United Methodist Church over in the Goose Hollow area. It's an exhibition put on by the American Friends Service Committee that demonstrates the human cost of war through the display of pairs of boots, each pair honoring a soldier who has been killed in Iraq. All of the boots have tags on them with the names of the soldiers they represent. Families of fallen soldiers have donated pictures and personal items that have been placed with the boots.
There was also a section which recognized the thousands of Iraqis killed. Unfortunately, or perhaps not, I came in as they were dismantling the exhibit, but was able to snap a few photos of this extraordinary and moving statement for peace.
Because our media has failed miserably at showing Americans the human cost of war, I'm grateful that there are organizations like AFSC that have taken the time to tell and show us the ultimate cost of war, but also sad that so few people will have the chance to view Eyes Wide Open.
